I spend a large amount of my time listening to ASMR, so it would be natural that I’d be on the constant lookout for the best experience with sound.
Of course, you can experience ASMR with cheap earpieces. Even the ones that comes with Chinese knockoffs mp3 players my dad used to bring back from China. There is no absolute NEED to have the latest and greatest listening device.
But if you have some spare cash and a little free time for this article, let me attempt to convince you why you should buy this pair of headphones that I’ve so adored over the past year.
By the way, it’ll be no surprise to you that I have not tried every single headphones or earpiece out there in the market. I only have a limited budget and I usually make do with what I have. Previously being an audiophile, I did lust over more expensive equipment that my budget did not afford. But it helped me understood why some devices produced sweeter sounds than others.
With that said, these are the requirements I made sure was present when I chose this headphones.
Firstly, obviously, it has to have good sound. The fact that its “open” headphones made its argument even more compelling. More on that later.
Secondly, it has to be comfortable. I don’t mean comfortable relative to those expensive headphones where it clamps your brain down with heat insulating muffs. I was going to be wearing this headphones for hours everyday, so it better felt wearing nothing at all.
Thirdly, it has to be an absolute bang for buck. Nothing thrills me more than a good bargain. It’s useless to find the perfect headphones with a $5000 price tag. Fortunately, I found the perfect middle ground where there’s basically no compromises.
Introducing the SHP9500 from Philips.
It’s an open-design over-ear headphones with 50 mm Neodymium Drivers. It has all sorts of features or specifications but what you’ll need to know is that this beauty checks all the boxes above.
Why headphones over my traditional earpieces?
Well, the obvious reasons include better sound quality when two similarly priced headphones and earpieces are being compared to.
The convenience factor comes into play. Headphones are nowhere near as good to bring out into public. But personally, I’d like to listen to my favorite ASMR videos in the comfort of my own home, where it’s my safe space. Thus, I’d rather go with a bulky headphones rather than the convenient and tiny earpieces.
What’s more, I have came to love the comfort that my headphones provide over my earpiece when it comes to long sessions of listening.
Why open headphones then?
I have experimented with both closed and open headphones.
Although closed headphones are more “immersive” such that it blocks sounds, I’ve often found myself uncomfortable, sweating, and feeling a little claustrophobic. The clamp between the headphones has the be slightly tighter, and the muffs often block all heat transfer.
Open headphones however, allow sound leakages. This means people beside you will get to hear whatever you’re hearing (at a softer volume of course), and you’ll be able to hear (to some extent) everything around you, including snapping your own fingers when you’re listening to your favorite songs. This sounds bad at first, but if you have the privacy of your own room or studio, you’ll be absolutely pleased with the melody it plays. The sounds tend to be truer to life and way more symphonic as you’ll interpret the sound closer to real life, instead of it bouncing between the closed space in your ears.
However, I have to include a disclaimer that this is what I’ve decided after years of trying different types of headphones. What I love might not be your cup of tea!
I have used this for over a year and I have had no regrets so far! Seriously, if you’re in the market for a pair of headphones, and have the luxury of privacy, you just found the holy grail of headphones.
